The Hogs Back Brewery, Manor Farm, Tongham, just off the A31; the brewery is housed in converted 18thC barns which provide an agrarian background to the ale brewing business. From small beginnings with just one beer, they now brew nearly twenty beer types on both a regular and occasional basis. The brewery has invested in an expansion programme, installing a fully-fitted racking and conditioning room and a new cask cellar. New fermentation vessels were also commissioned and the company acquired a 500-year old barn to house the brewery shop and off-licence. The premises have a ghost, said to walk the brewery gallery.
The tour takes about an hour and a quarter, taking us through the various processes and with plenty of liquid refreshment on route. We finished in the Brewery Shop and Off-Licence which contains a mouth-watering array of beers and merchandise in addition to Hogs Back's own range.
The brewery produces: Hair of the Hog, TEA (Traditional English Ale), Hop Garden Gold, and Rip Snorter
Occasional/seasonal beers: Dark Mild, Legend, APB (A Pinta Bitter), Friday 13th, Blackwater Porter, BSA (Burma Star Ale), YES (Your Every Success), Fuggles Nouveau, Goldings Nouveau, Utopia, OTT (Old Tongham Tasty), Brewster's Bundle, Santa's Wobble, A Over T (Aromas Over Tongham), and Wheat Your Whistle
Bottle-conditioned beers: TEA, BSA, Brewester's Bundle, A Over T, and Wobble In A Bottle
This is a first-rate tour and can't be recommended too highly (so good in fact that the branch paid a second visit some six months later. ed.) If you wish to arrange a tour, please contact the Brewery on: 01252 783000 or check out their website
